| Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/><br/>RESUMO - A pesquisa objetivou verificar a influência de tratamentos térmicos na taxa de secagem e qualidade da madeira de uva-do-Japão (Hovenia dulcis Thunb.). Foram colhidas quatro árvores de 25 anos de idade com diâmetro a altura do peito médio de 39,5 cm e altura comercial média de 10 m, transformadas em amostras de 40 x 130 x 500 mm (espessura x largura x comprimento) e classificadas quanto à orientação radial e tangencial do material. Os tratamentos aplicados consistiram de aquecimento em água por 12 e 24 h, a 85 ºC, e congelamento por 12 e 24 h, a -18 ºC. Após o tratamento, a madeira foi submetida à secagem a 75 ºC em estufa de convecção forçada até atingir 12% de teor de umidade. Os tratamentos de aquecimento e congelamento influenciaram na taxa de secagem, uma vez que o primeiro diminuiu o processo de secagem, enquanto o segundo, o acelerou. O tratamento de congelamento a 24 h com as amostras orientadas no sentido tangencial apresentou maior taxa de secagem em relação aos demais. Os tratamentos foram não significativos para a redução de contrações nas amostras em largura, espessura e comprimento, já a contração volumétrica, foi significativamente mais elevada nas amostras aquecidas em água. A madeira de uva-do-Japão não apresentou rachaduras de topo ou de superfície em nenhum dos tratamentos considerados neste estudo. <br/><br/><br/><br/>Palavras-chave: aquecimento, congelamento, taxa de secagem |

| Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/><br/>ABSTRACT - The purpose of this study was ascertaining the influence of heat treatments in the drying rate and wood quality of Japanese raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis Thunb.). In order to do so, four trees with 25 years and average diameter at breast height of 39.5 cm and an average commercial height of 10 m, were harvested and transformed into samples of 40 x 130 x 500 mm (thickness x width x length), and classified as to the radial and tangential orientation of the material. The treatments consisted of heating in water by 12 and 24 h at 85 ºC, and freezing by 12 and 24 h at - 18 ºC. Then, the lumber was subjected to drying at 75 °C in a forced convection greenhouse until reach 12% of final moisture content. The freezing and heating treatments have proven to be influential on the drying rate, since the first accelerated the drying process, whereas the other one decreased. The freezing treatment by 24 h with samples oriented in the tangential direction showed higher drying rate compared with the others. The treatments presented to be not significant for the reduction of the contractions in the samples related to width, thickness and length. However, the volumetric contraction was significantly higher in samples heated in water. The Hovenia dulcis wood did not show top or surface cracks in any of the treatments used in this study.<br/><br/><br/>Key words: heating, freezing, drying rate |
