| Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/><br/>RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar parâmetros genéticos e realizar estudos de associação entre caracteres de interesse agronômico em 24 acessos de bucha vegetal (Luffa cylindrica L.) provenientes de sete Estados brasileiros, com o intuito de selecionar genótipos potencialmente promissores para serem introduzidos em programas de melhoramento da cultura. Foram avaliados nove caracteres relacionados a produção e a qualidade de frutos e fibras de importância econômica para a espécie. A presença de variabilidade genética e altas herdabilidades em nível de médias (0,70 - 0,99) indicaram a possibilidade de ganhos expressivos com a aplicação da seleção fenotípica para os caracteres de interesse. Ganho genético de 42,79% foi obtido para produção de fibras após seleção dos oito genótipos superiores. As maiores correlações (r > 0,73) foram alcançadas entre os caracteres relacionados a circunferência dos frutos e espessura de fibra. A massa seca da fibra e o número de frutos apresentaram elevados efeitos diretos sobre a produção de fibras, todavia, com efeitos indiretos indesejáveis entre estes. O uso de índice de seleção possibilitou ganhos simultâneos em caracteres correlacionados negativamente, gerando boa perspectiva para o desenvolvimento de cultivares de bucha para uso na agroindústria de acordo com o mercado para qual o produto se destina. <br/><br/><br/><br/>Palavras-chave: ganho genético; herdabilidade; Luffa cylindrica L.; modelos mistos |

| Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/><br/>ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and conduct association studies between traits of agro-industrial interest in 24 accessions of vegetable sponge (Luffa cylindrica L.) from seven Brazilian states in order to identify potentially promising genotypes to be introduced in crop breeding programs. The assessment covered nine traits related to the yield and quality of fruits and fibers of economic importance for the species. The presence of genetic variability and high mean heritability (0.70 - 0.99) are indicative of possible significant gains by applying phenotypic selection for traits of interest. A genetic gain of 42.79% was obtained for fiber production after selecting eight superior genotypes. The highest estimated correlations (r > 0.73) were between the traits related to fruit circumference and fiber thickness. Dry fiber weight and the number of fruits showed strong direct effects on fiber yield, but there were some undesirable indirect effects. Use of the selection index produced simultaneous gains in negatively correlated traits, offering a promising outlook for the development of vegetable sponge cultivars for use in agro-industry. <br/><br/><br/><br/> Key words: genetic gain; heritability; Luffa cylindrica L.; mixed model |
