RESUMO:
Óleos essenciais, ricos em compostos terpênicos, são tradicionalmente empregados como
matérias-primas industriais nos setores de aromas e fragrâncias, cosmética e farmacêutica. Este trabalho
identificou as atuais áreas tecnológicas em que esses compostos são utilizados, por meio do estudo
bibliométrico das patentes depositadas nos Estados Unidos e relacionadas ao tema. Aplicando-se a
metodologia no período de 1980 até 2003, listaram-se 12.955 documentos de patentes, que tiveram suas
áreas tecnológicas identificadas pela Classificação Internacional de Patentes (IPC7). Destacaram-se, nessa
pesquisa, as Seções A (Necessidades Humanas) e C (Química), correspondendo por 69,14% das 14.018
citações registradas e relativas às 346 aplicações tecnológicas envolvendo os óleos essenciais e compostos
terpênicos. A ferramenta taxionômica permitiu identificar os cinco grupos do conhecimento tecnológico
mais importantes para a pesquisa, listados em ordem de relevância: a) Preparações Medicinais,
respondendo por 13,95%; b) Manipulação Genética de Plantas Superiores ou Microorganismos Visando à
Síntese de Terpenos, computando 8,37%; c) Tensoativos, 4,04%; d) Polímeros, 3,32%; e e) Cosméticos,
totalizando 3,10%. Na mesma pesquisa, verificaram-se 1.138 titulares-proprietários dessas patentes, sendo
485 pessoas físicas e 653 pessoas jurídicas. As companhias norte-americanas Procter & Gamble (2,01%
das patentes listadas na pesquisa) e Colgate-Palmolive (1,38%), a francesa L’oreal (2,01%) e a alemã
Hoechst (1,09%) merecem ser citadas em relação ao número de patentes. Mediante as patentes concedidas
no período analisado, em nível mundial, observa-se pelos resultados que a busca por novas tecnologias
para áreas de tensoativos, compostos farmacêuticos e polímeros vêm dominando as atividades de P&D
nas empresas relacionadas nessa pesquisa.

ABSTRACT:

Patent protection in the use of essential oils and terpenic compounds in technological and
industrial development. Essential oils are rich in terpenic compounds, traditionally used as industrial raw
materials in flavor and fragrance, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries worldwide. This work identified
the current technological areas where these substances are used, employing a bibliometric study of the
patents deposited in the United States and correlating them to this research. Applying the methodology for the
period from 1980 to 2002, 12,955 patents were found within technological areas identified by the International
Patents Classification (IPC7). In this category, Section A (Human Necessities) and Section C (Chemical) were
noteworthy, corresponding to 69.14% of a total 14,018 citations relative to the 346 technological applications
involving essential oils and terpenic compounds. Taxionomy classification tool has allowed the identification
of the five most important groups of technological knowledge for the field: a) Medicinal preparations,
corresponding to 13.95%; b) Genetic Manipulation of Plants or Microorganisms for the Synthesis of Terpenics
compounds, equivalent to 8.37%; c) Surfactants, 4.04%; d) Polymers, 3.32% and, e) Cosmetics, totalizing
3.10%. In the same research, 1,138 applicants (owners of patents) were identified, being 485 individual
patent owners and 653 legal entities. North-American companies Procter & Gamble (2.01% of the patents
listed in the research) and Colgate-Palmolive (1.38%), the French company L’Oreal (2.01%) and the German
company Hoechst (1.09%) had remarkably high numbers of patents. The results of the analyses of the
number of grant patents indicate that the search for new technologies for the areas of pharmaceuticals,
surfactants and polymers dominated the activities of R&D in the companies in this field of research worldwide
in the studied period of time.
