RESUMO:

O consumo de plantas medicinais e alimentos funcionais vêm sendo aceito como
alternativa à alopatia convencional em todo o mundo. Nesse contexto, os estudos que buscam
reunir informações sobre espécies vegetais consumidas pela população possuem grande
importância científica e econômica. O presente trabalho objetivou realizar um levantamento
bibliográfico de artigos originais, artigos de revisões, dissertações, teses e livros publicados
até 2016 nos idiomas português e inglês, cujo objeto de estudo fosse a Acrocomia aculeata.
A pesquisa comtemplou informações botânicas, geográficas, aplicações populares e de
composição química da espécie, além dos aspectos etnofarmacológico, toxicológico e
atividades biológicas pesquisadas. Os estudos presentes na literatura apontaram que a espécie
é amplamente difundida e consumida pela população. Entre os efeitos biológicos destaca-se
o potencial fortificante, purgativo, analgésico, hipocolesterolêmico e hipoglicemiante. Sobre
os estudos toxicológicos, há pesquisas envolvendo roedores que descrevem a ausência de
toxicidade aguda, subaguda e genotoxicidade da espécie. As informações contidas neste
trabalho demonstram a aceitação popular do consumo desse fruto aliada à grande variabilidade
de aplicações medicinais e nutricionais. Entretanto, mesmo com promissor efeito farmacológico,
há uma quantidade limitada de pesquisas sobre benefícios ao organismo humano, o que
representa campo propício para novos estudos.

ABSTRACT:

Botanical, ethnopharmacological and toxicological aspects of Acrocomia
aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd Ex Mart. The use of functional foods and medicinal plants has been
accepted as an alternative to conventional allopathic medicines worldwide. In this context,
studies seeking to gather information on plant species consumed by the population have a
great scientific and an economic importance. This study aimed to perform a literature review of
original articles, review articles, dissertations, theses and books published until 2016, in English
and Portuguese, whose object of study was Acrocomia aculeata. The research included popular
applications, chemical composition, botanical and geographical information of the species.
In addition, aspects of ethnopharmacological, toxicological and biological activities already
studied were also included. Studies in the literature indicated that the species is widespread
and consumed by the population. Among the biological effects, the fortifier, purgative, analgesic,
hypocholesterolemic and hypoglycemic potentials are highlighted. Regarding the toxicological
studies, there is research involving rodents that describe the low genotoxicity as well as low
acute and subacute toxicity of the species. The contents in this study demonstrate the popular
acceptance of the consumption of this fruit combined with great variability of medicinal and
nutritional applications. However, even with a promising pharmacological effect, there is a
limited amount of research on the benefits to the human body, which represents a favorable
field for further studies.
