Descriptive aspects of Jaçanã hunting (Porphyrio martinicus) in São Bento, maranhense Amazon region In Maranhão, jaçanã Porphyrio martinicus hunting is intense and occurs in an area of great environmental importance, the Baixada Maranhense. The objective of the research is to describe the hunting that occurs in São Bento, Maranhão, Brazil, pointing out the main techniques used and possible ecological damage to the bird and the environment. The research has a qualitative approach, using a semi-structured interview and building a contact network based on Snowball Sampling and Bardin analysis as a data collection instrument. In all, 18 hunters from a village in the municipality of São Bento were interviewed. The data showed that among the capture and approach techniques the most used was the 36-caliber shotgun, which allows the slaughter of 10 to 50 birds per huntingand in the study area both predatory and subsistence hunting occurs. The data describe the predatory hunting activity and are preliminary to the development of sustainable hunting and awareness of practitioners through environmental education.

No Maranhão, a caça de jaçanã, Porphyrio martinicus, tem intenso registro e ocorre em área de grande importância ambiental, a Baixada Maranhense. O objetivo da pesquisa é descrever a caça que ocorre em São Bento, Maranhão, Brasil, apontando as principais técnicas utilizadas e possíveis prejuízos ecológicos a ave e ao ambiente. A pesquisa é de abordagem qualitativa, utilizando como instrumento de coleta de dados a entrevista semiestruturada e construção de rede de contatos baseada em Snowball Sampling e análise de Bardin. Ao todo foram entrevistados 18 caçadores de um povoado no município de São Bento. Os dados demonstraram que dentre as técnicas de captura e aproximação, a mais utilizada foi a espingarda de calibre 36, que permite abater de 10 a 50 aves por caça e na área de estudo ocorre tanto a caça predatória, quanto de subsistência. Os dados descrevem a atividade de caça predatória e são preliminares ao desenvolvimento de uma caça de caráter sustentável e sensibilização dos praticantes por meio da educação ambiental.
