ativos do óleo essencial obtido.

ABSTRACT:

Study ofthe drying effect in the composition ofthe essential oil of citronela (Cymbopogon
nardus). Many works are cited in the literature showing the efficiency of the citronella sail and its active
natural principles. In the market, there are available extracted oils (essences) or the plant in nature. This
work has as an objective the evaluation of the drying effect in the composition of the dried and wet leaves.
The methodology of the work was based on an evaluation of the essential oils present in the wet and dried
leaves and in leaves dried at normal temperature and at 50, 60 and 70°C in natural convection in a
greenhouse and at 70°C in natural convection in a dryer constructed in the Chemical Engineering Department
(UFRRJ). The extraction of the essential oil was done in a Clevenger apparatus. The analysis of the
compositions of the components present in the extracts were done by a gas chromatograph coupled to a
mass spectrofotometer. The essential oils obtained using wet and drying leaves of citronela were
characterized by complex mixtures due to the number of components. It was observed the presence of
esters of fatty acids only in the oils obtained by the wet leaves. In relation of the drying leaves of citronella,
there were no changing in the composition of the essential oils of the dried leaves at 50, 60 and 70°C.
