RESUMO: 

A composição química do óleo essencial de Mentha piperita (Lamiaceae) é extremamente
importante para a indústria farmacêutica, de cosméticos e de alimentos, podendo afetar drasticamente o
valor comercial do óleo. Neste estudo, foram avaliadas a produção e a composição química do óleo
essencial de M. piperita cultivada em um sistema hidropônico (NFT). Os resultados indicaram teores de
óleo essencial significativamente diferentes, variando entre 0,71% e 1,33%. Ao longo do dia observou-se
alta produção de mentona (34-42%), mentofurano (24-30%), pulegona (14-22%), acetato de mentila (3-
7%) e baixa produção de mentol (5-8%) que pode ser atribuída à idade da planta.

ABSTRACT: 

Evaluation of the contents and chemical composition of the essential oil from Mentha
piperita (L.) Huds during daytime in hydroponic cultivation. The chemical composition of Mentha piperita
(Lamiaceae) oil is very important for pharmaceutical, cosmetics and flavor industries. Moreover, it can
drastically affect the commercial value of the oil. In this study, the production and the chemical composition
of the essential oil from M. piperita was evaluated for plants cultivated in a hydroponic system (NFT). The
results indicated that essential oil contents were significantly different, ranging from 0.71% to 1.33%.
During daytime, a high production of the menthone (34-42%), menthofuran (24-30%), pulegone (14-22%),
menthyl acetate (3-7%) and a low menthol production (3-7%) were observed; these figures may be attributed
to the plant age.
