RESUMO:

Chiococca alba (L.) Hitchc.
respectivamente, 70 ± 27mg/dl_ e 107 ± 20mg/dl_. Os demais parâmetros mostraram resultados semelhantes
entre animais controles e tratados com cipó-cruz.

ABSTRACT:

Study of biochemical parameters in rats treated with medicinal plant. [XI. Chiococca alba
(L.) Hitchc]. Chiococca alba (L.) Hitchc (family Rubiaceae) (snowberry, snakeroot), widely distributed in
brazilian territory, was been employed in popular medicine for present diuretic, purgative, anti-inflammatory
and anti-rheumatic effects. Its main phytochemical constituents are cardiac glycosides, saponins, tannins,
flavonoids, alkaloids and a triterpene. Few studies exist regarding the toxicity of this plant, and amongst them
the indication of the toxicity of the root if ingested in great amount. The aim of this work was to evaluated
serum biochemical parameters of rats under the action of high doses of the snowberry, as part of the
preclinical studies of repeated doses for the development of the plant as phytotherapic medicine. Ten Wistar
rats had been used. The treated group received the infusion prepared from roots of the plant (33.2g/L water),
ad libitum, for 7 days, while the control group received water instead of infusion. The blood was collected by
cardiac puncture and the serum separated. The following parameters had been evaluated: total cholesterol,
triglycerides, uric acid, urea, creatinine, aspartate-aminotransferase, alanine-aminotransferase, gamaglutamyltransferase,
total protein, albumin, serum amylase, calcium, phosphorus and iron. The results had
been evaluated statistically by Mann-Whitney test. The treated and control group showed statistically significant
differences (p<0,05) to amylase, triglycerides and total cholesterol. The treated group showed concentration
of triglycerides higher than control group, respectively, 67 ± 9mg/dl_ and 54 ± 6mg/dL. The serum amylase of
treated group was higher than control group, respectively, 1137 ± 81U/L and 831 ± 342U/L. On the other
hand, the concentration of total cholesterol for treated group was lower than control, respectively, 70 ± 27mg/
dL and 107 ± 20mg/dl_. Other parameters showed similar results in both animal groups studied.
