RESUMO: 

O extrato da planta Ginkgo biloba (GB) é comumente usado no tratamento dos
sintomas da doença de Alzheimer ou ainda na tentativa de prevenção dessa enfermidade.
Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura, analisando ensaios clínicos e estudos de coorte para
verificar informações referentes ao uso da planta, utilizando como plataforma de pesquisa em
banco de dados a Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde. Foi utilizada para a busca a sentença “Doença
de Alzheimer AND Ginkgo biloba”. Foram obtidos 12 artigos. Em alguns estudos seu efeito foi
comparado com tradicionalmente usados inibidores de colinesterase, enquanto em outros foi
feita a comparação com placebo. A forma pela qual a planta é predominantemente utilizada
é por meio do extrato vegetal feito a partir de suas folhas. Obteve-se como resultados que o
extrato da GB mostrou-se efetivo no retardo da deterioração cognitiva e no alívio dos sintomas
neuropsiquiátricos provocados pela doença, assim como na prevenção da manifestação dela.
No entanto, também houveram trabalhos de grande relevância que tiveram como resultado
a ineficiência da planta. Conclui-se que, apesar de haverem estudos demonstrando efeitos
positivos da planta no tratamento da doença, são necessários mais estudos nessa área para
determinar a ação da planta no organismo dos afetados por essa afecção. Foi verificado que
não existem efeitos colaterais negativos significativos que contraindiquem o consumo do extrato
da Ginkgo biloba por seres humanos.

ABSTRACT: 

The use of Ginkgo biloba to treat amd prevent Alzheimer´s disease. The
extract of the plant Ginkgo biloba (GB) is commonly used in the treatment of the symptoms
of Alzheimer disease and in the attempt to prevent this condition. A literature review was
realized, having as objective to analyze clinical trials and cohort studies to verify the scientific
knowledge about the use of this plant, using as database the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (Virtual
Health Library). The search was made using the sentence “Alzheimer´s disease AND Gingko
biloba”. There were obtained 12 articles. In some studies, GB’s effects were compared with
the traditionally used cholinesterase inhibitors, while in other the comparison was made with
placebo. The way in which the plant is predominantly used is by the extract made from its leaves.
It was concluded that the GB’s extract showed effectiveness in delaying cognitive deterioration,
in reliefing neuropsychiatric symptoms induced by the disease and in the prevention of its
expression. However, there were also important articles that had as result the inefficiency of
the plant. Therefore, despite many studies showed positive effects of the plant in the treatment
of the disease, more studies about this subject are needed to better understand GB’s effect on
the health of affected individuals. There was also verified that there are description of negative
collateral effects that could contraindicate the use of GB’s extract by humans.
