RESUMO: 

A Croton heliotropiifolius, conhecida popularmente como velame, &#xE9; uma das
esp&#xE9;cies com potencial medicinal da flora do Nordeste do Brasil. A leishmaniose e a doen&#xE7;a
de Chagas s&#xE3;o doen&#xE7;as bem difundidas no mundo que atingem, respectivamente, 1,6 milh&#xF5;es
e 10 milh&#xF5;es de pessoas nas Am&#xE9;ricas. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a atividade
antiparasit&#xE1;ria contra Leishmania infantum, Leishmania brasiliensis e Trypanosoma cruzi, assim
como a citotoxicidade (c&#xE9;lulas de fibroblastos murinos - NCTC929) do extrato etan&#xF3;lico bruto
das folhas de Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth, esp&#xE9;cie medicinal de usos m&#xFA;ltiplos, coletada
num fragmento de Cerrado em meio &#xE0; Caatinga, em Lavras da Mangabeira, Sul do Cear&#xE1;. A
an&#xE1;lise por cromatografia l&#xED;quida de alta efici&#xEA;ncia (CLAE-DAD) tamb&#xE9;m foi realizada, a fim
de relacionar &#xE0; presen&#xE7;a do conte&#xFA;do fen&#xF3;lico, dentre eles os &#xE1;cidos fen&#xF3;licos tais como o
&#xE1;cido g&#xE1;lico, &#xE1;cido clorog&#xEA;nico e &#xE1;cido cafeico, bem como flavonoides, como a rutina, luteolina,
apigenina e quercetina. Com os resultados da avalia&#xE7;&#xE3;o antiparasit&#xE1;ria o teste desta atividade
antipromastigota mostrou-se significativo na inibi&#xE7;&#xE3;o do T. cruzi (81,70% na concentra&#xE7;&#xE3;o de
1000 &#x3BC;g/mL). Contra L. infantum observou-se inibi&#xE7;&#xE3;o de 92,15% (500 &#x3BC;g/mL) e contra a L.
brasiliensis, 100% (250 &#x3BC;g/mL). Com isso, foi considerado eficaz contra as cepas dos parasitas
testadas, apresentando-se como fonte alternativa de produtos naturais contra essas esp&#xE9;cies de
protozo&#xE1;rios. Entretanto, o extrato apresentou alta atividade citot&#xF3;xica em fibroblastos murinos
em todas as concentra&#xE7;&#xF5;es, mostrando a necessidade de novos testes que viabilizem futuros
ensaios in vivo, inclusive sobre atividade antineopl&#xE1;sica em c&#xE9;lulas humanas.

ABSTRACT: 

Antiparasitic and cytotoxic activity of the ethanol extract leaves of Croton
heliotropiifolius Kunth (Euphorbiaceae). Croton heliotropiifolius, popularly known as canopy,
is a species with potential medicinal flora of Northeastern Brazil. Leishmaniasis and Chagas&#x2019;
disease are well spread diseases in the world reaching, respectively, 1.6 million and 10 million
people in the Americas. This study aimed to analyze the antiparasitic activity against Leishmania
infantum, Leishmania brasiliensis and Trypanosoma cruzi, as well as cytotoxicity (cell murine
fibroblasts - NCTC929) of the ethanol extract of leaves of Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth, a
medicinal species of multiple uses, collected in a Cerrado fragment amidst the Caatinga in
Lavras da Mangabeira, South of Cear&#xE1;. Analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography
(HPLC-DAD) was also performed in order to relate to the presence of phenolic content,
including phenolic acids such as gallic acid, chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid, and flavonoids
such as rutin, luteolin, apigenin and quercetin. With the evaluation antiparasitic results the test
of the antipromastigote activity showed a significant inhibition of T. cruzi (81.70% at 1000 mg
/ mL). Against L. infantum it was observed an inhibition of 92.15% (500 mg / mL) and against
L. brasiliensis, 100% (250 / mL). Thus, it was considered effective against the parasite strains
here tested, presenting itself as an alternative source of natural products against these protozoa
species. However, the extract showed a high cytotoxic activity in murine fibroblasts at all
concentrations, showing the need for new tests that could enable future in vivo trials, including
an antineoplastic activity in human cells.
