ABSTRACT: 

Natural products have been studied as a possible alternative for treatment of
infections caused by resistant pathogens. Anadenanthera colubrina, var. cebil (Fabaceae) is a
plant found in semi-arid regions of Brazil, traditionally used for treatment of coughs and bronchitis. 
This study evaluated the intrinsic antimicrobial activity of ethanoic extract from stem bark
of A. colubrina var. cebil and the possible occurrence of phytochemicals acting as modulators
of fluoroquinolone resistance. Minimal inhibitory concentration of the extract against different
strains was determined by micro-dilution assay. Evaluation of modulatory activity on antibiotic
resistance was performed through the determination of minimal inhibitory concentration of
fluoroquinolones in presence or absence of the extract at sub-inhibitory concentration against
the Staphylococcus aureus SA-1199B, which overexpress the NorA efflux pump. The extract
did not show intrinsic antimicrobial activity against all strains tested. However, it was able to
enhance the activity of Norfloxacin and Ciprofloxacin, as well as Ethidium Bromide, against
S. aureus SA-1199B. A. colubrina var. cebil is a source of phytochemicals able to inhibit NorA
efflux pump of S. aureus.

RESUMO: 

Avalia&#xE7;&#xE3;o das atividades antimicrobiana e modificadoras da resist&#xEA;ncia aos
antibi&#xF3;ticos de Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil em Staphylococcus aureus. 
Os produtos naturais t&#xEA;m sido estudados como uma poss&#xED;vel alternativa para o tratamento de infec&#xE7;&#xF5;es causadas por pat&#xF3;genos resistentes. Anadenanthera colubrina, var. cebil (Fabaceae)
&#xE9; uma planta encontrada nas regi&#xF5;es semi&#xE1;ridas do Brasil, tradicionalmente utilizada para o
tratamento de tosse e bronquite. Este estudo avaliou a atividade antimicrobiana intr&#xED;nseca do
extrato etan&#xF3;lico da casca do caule de A. colubrina var. cebil e a poss&#xED;vel presen&#xE7;a de 
fitoqu&#xED;micos que atuam como moduladores da resist&#xEA;ncia &#xE0;s fluoroquinolonas. A concentra&#xE7;&#xE3;o
inibit&#xF3;ria m&#xED;nima do extrato contra diferentes cepas foi determinada por ensaio de microdilui&#xE7;&#xE3;o. 
A avalia&#xE7;&#xE3;o da atividade moduladora sobre a resist&#xEA;ncia aos antibi&#xF3;ticos foi realizada
por meio da determina&#xE7;&#xE3;o da concentra&#xE7;&#xE3;o inibit&#xF3;ria m&#xED;nima de fluoroquinolonas na presen&#xE7;a
ou na aus&#xEA;ncia do extrato a uma concentra&#xE7;&#xE3;o sub-inibit&#xF3;ria contra o Staphylococcus aureus
SA-1199B, que superexpressa a bomba de efluxo NorA. O extrato n&#xE3;o apresentou atividade
antimicrobiana intr&#xED;nseca contra todas as cepas testadas. No entanto, ela foi capaz de aumentar 
a atividade da norfloxacina e da ciprofloxacina, bem como do brometo de et&#xED;dio, contra
S. aureus SA-1199B. A. var colubrina. cebil &#xE9; uma fonte de fitoqu&#xED;micos capazes de inibir a
bomba de efluxo NorA de S. aureus.
