RESUMO: 

Maytenus ilicifolia &#xE9; uma esp&#xE9;cie nativa do sul do Brasil com import&#xE2;ncia medicinal
no tratamento de gastrite e &#xFA;lcera g&#xE1;strica. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a atividade
antioxidante e a concentra&#xE7;&#xE3;o de fen&#xF3;is totais e flavonoides em acessos do Banco Ativo de
Germoplasma de Espinheira-Santa da Embrapa Clima Temperado/Instituto Federal Sul-riograndense. 
Para as an&#xE1;lises foi utilizado extrato obtido das folhas secas e realizada leitura em
espectrofot&#xF4;metro com metodologia espec&#xED;fica para cada avalia&#xE7;&#xE3;o. Os resultados mostraram
que esta esp&#xE9;cie possui alto teor de fen&#xF3;is totais e elevada atividade antioxidante e pode ser
considerada uma fonte suplementar de compostos antioxidantes e compostos fen&#xF3;licos. O alto
teor de fen&#xF3;is totais pode ter sido favorecido pelo cultivo a pleno sol dos acessos avaliados,
visto que houve baixa herdabilidade para os metab&#xF3;litos secund&#xE1;rios avaliados e n&#xE3;o houve
diferen&#xE7;a significativa entre os acessos para estes caracteres.

ABSTRACT: 

Antioxidant activity, total phenolics and flavonoids in espinheira-santa
(Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. ex Reissek, Celastraceae). Maytenus ilicifolia is a native species
of southern Brazil which has medical importance in the treatment of gastritis and gastric ulcer.
This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and the concentration of total phenolics and
flavonoids in accessions of the Genebank of Espinheira-Santa from Embrapa Clima Temperado/
Instituto Federal Sul-rio-grandense. The extract obtained from the dried leaves was analyzed.
The reading in spectrophotometer followed specific methodology for each assessment. The
results showed that the plant species has a high content of total phenols and high antioxidant
activity and can be considered an additional source of antioxidants and phenolic compounds.
The high content of total phenols may have been favored by the unshaded of accessions, since
there was low heritability for the evaluated secondary metabolites and there was no significant
difference among the accessions for these characters.
