ABSTRACT:      Seeds  are  exposed  to  diverse  environmental  factors  when  dispersed,  including  abiotic  stresses,  which  will  affect  germination.  Drought  is  the  most  important  factor  affecting  germination,  since  water  is  essential  for  seed  development.  Aspidosperma  polyneuron  is  a  native  endangered  species  which  has  been  extensively  exploited,  mainly  for  timber  extraction  purposes.  This  study  analyzed  germination  and  degradation  of  soluble  sugars  and  proteins  of  A.  polyneuron  seeds  during  germination  under  water  stress.  Seeds  were  placed  on  Germitest  papers  moistened  with  different  water  potential  solutions,  varying from 0.0 to -1.4 MPa. Degradation of soluble sugars and soluble proteins was assessed in five stages of germination at the different water potentials. A. polyneuron seeds lost germination capacity as the water potential decreased, being unable to germinate below -0.6 MPa. Glutelin was the most abundant storage protein in the seed, while prolamin was the least. Reserve degradation  was  altered  in  negative  water  potentials.  Soluble  proteins  are  degraded  faster  and  soluble  sugars  are  degraded  slower as the water potential drops.

RESUMO:         Quando  dispersas,  as  sementes  s&#xE3;o  expostas  &#xE0;  diversos  fatores  ambientais,  incluindo  estresses  abi&#xF3;ticos,  os  quais ir&#xE3;o afetar sua germina&#xE7;&#xE3;o. A seca &#xE9; o fator mais limitante que afeta a germina&#xE7;&#xE3;o, j&#xE1; que a &#xE1;gua &#xE9; essencial para o desenvolvimento da semente. Aspidosperma polyneuron &#xE9; uma esp&#xE9;cie nativa em perigo de extin&#xE7;&#xE3;o, extensamente explorada para extra&#xE7;&#xE3;o madeireira. Este estudo analisou a germina&#xE7;&#xE3;o e degrada&#xE7;&#xE3;o de a&#xE7;&#xFA;cares e prote&#xED;nas sol&#xFA;veis de A. polyneurondurante  a  germina&#xE7;&#xE3;o  sob  estresse  h&#xED;drico.  Sementes  foram  dispostas  em  pap&#xE9;is  Germitest  umedecidos  com  solu&#xE7;&#xF5;es  em  diferentes potenciais h&#xED;dricos, que variaram de 0,0 &#xE0; -1,4 MPa. A degrada&#xE7;&#xE3;o de a&#xE7;&#xFA;cares e prote&#xED;nas sol&#xFA;veis foi avaliada em cinco est&#xE1;gios de germina&#xE7;&#xE3;o nos diferentes potenciais h&#xED;dricos. Sementes de A. polyneuron perderam capacidade germinativa conforme o potencial h&#xED;drico diminuiu, n&#xE3;o germinando abaixo de -0,6 MPa. Glutelina foi a prote&#xED;na de armazenamento mais abundante na semente, enquanto prolamina a menos presente. A degrada&#xE7;&#xE3;o de reservas foi alterada em potenciais h&#xED;dricos negativos, sendo que as prote&#xED;nas sol&#xFA;veis foram degradadas mais rapidamente e os a&#xE7;&#xFA;cares mais lentamente conforme o potencial h&#xED;drico diminuiu.
