Jane Eyre's parents die when she is very young and she is very young and she spends a loveless childhood in the care of her aunt and cousins. When she is ten she is sent away to school. Here life is not much better, with little food or warmth. At last she is able to leave school, and she goes to work as a governess. Life in her new home is quiet until her employer, Mr Rochester, suddenly returns. At first Jane has little to do with him, but then their love develops - though threatened by Mr Rochester's mysterious past.
