| Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/>ABSTRACT: <br/><br/>Gallus domesticus L. is a cosmopolitan and easy-breeding species, which can<br/>be used as model for toxicity tests to birds. The objective of this research was to assess the<br/>toxicity of aqueous extracts at 5% w/v of Echinodorus grandiflorus (Alismataceae), Matricaria<br/>chamomilla (Asteraceae) and Maytenus ilicifolia (Celastraceae), plants with insecticidal potential,<br/>to G. domesticus. For five days, 48 chickens were fed with the regular diet associated with<br/>the aqueous extracts. The groups were: (1) E. grandiflorus; (2) M. chamomilla; (3) M. ilicifolia<br/>and (4) control group. They were observed for 12 days and then, euthanized. Samples of<br/>selected organs were processed for histopathological investigations. No uncommon behaviour,<br/>aggressiveness or external lesions were verified. The food intake during the experiment was<br/>similar in all groups and it was significantly increased until the end of the experiment. In addition,<br/>there was no statistical difference between the treated groups and the control group regarding<br/>to weight gain of the birds or liver enzymes. Histological examination of the small intestine, liver<br/>and kidney revealed no consistent alterations. | Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/>RESUMO: <br/><br/>Toxicidade de plantas inseticidas em galináceos . O Gallus domesticus L. é<br/>uma espécie cosmopolita e de fácil manejo que pode ser utilizada como modelo de toxicidade<br/>para aves. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a toxicidade dos extratos aquosos a 5% de<br/>Echinodorus grandiflorus (Alismataceae), Matricaria chamomilla (Asteraceae) e Maytenus<br/>ilicifolia (Celastraceae), plantas com potencial inseticida, sobre o G. domesticus. Por cinco<br/>dias, 48 frangos foram alimentados com ração associada aos extratos aquosos (5.000 mg/kg<br/>de dieta). Os grupos foram: (1) E. grandiflorus; (2) M. chamomilla; (3) M. ilicifolia e (4) controle.<br/>Os animais foram observados por 12 dias e sacrificados. Amostras de órgãos selecionados<br/>passaram por avaliação histopatológica. Não foi verificada nenhuma alteração comportamental,<br/>agressividade ou lesões externas. O consumo de alimento foi similar em todos os grupos. Além<br/>disso, não houve diferença estatística entre os grupos tratados e o controle quanto ao ganho<br/>de peso das aves ou às enzimas no soro sanguíneo. A histopatologia do intestino delgado,<br/>fígado e rim não mostrou qualquer alteração.
