| Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/>RESUMO: <br/><br/>O presente estudo teve o objetivo de verificar o uso de fitoterápicos e plantas<br/>medicinais entre os idosos para o controle de doenças crônicas. A metodologia utilizada na<br/>presente pesquisa foi uma revisão integrativa. Foi evidenciado que a maioria dos idosos utiliza<br/>as plantas medicinais para o tratamento de diabetes e hipertensão arterial. Além disso, um<br/>número considerável de idosos consome as plantas do próprio quintal, dos vizinhos e amigos<br/>para fazer chá na forma de infusão, principalmente entre as mulheres. No entanto, os idosos<br/>utilizam as plantas que não são comprovadas cientificamente para a finalidade almejada,<br/>preparam de forma inadequada e selecionam a parte incorreta da erva, acreditando que irão<br/>alcançar o controle da doença. Apesar disto, foram encontrados idosos que utilizam plantas<br/>que são reconhecidas cientificamente para o tratamento proposto, reforçando o saber popular.<br/>Porém, apesar dos idosos terem conhecimento popular, torna-se importante a participação de<br/>um profissional habilitado e com conhecimento para orientar os idosos quanto aos riscos de<br/>interação, intoxicação, forma de uso, e forma de preparo e, principalmente, o reconhecimento<br/>seguro das espécies.<br/><br/>Palavras-chave: fitoterápicos, ervas medicinais, plantas medicinais, tratamento, idoso. |

| Nota de conteúdo | <br/><br/>ABSTRACT: <br/><br/>Phytotherapeutics and medicinal plants: use among the elderly in the control<br/>of chronic diseases. The objective of the present study was to verify the use of phytotherapics<br/>and medicinal plants among the elderly to control chronic diseases. The methodology used in this<br/>research was an integrative review. It was evidenced that the majority of the elderly use medicinal<br/>plants mainly for the treatment of diabetes and hypertension. In addition, a considerable number<br/>of elderly people consume plants of their own yard, or from neighbors and friends, in order to<br/>make tea in form of infusion, especially among women. However, the elderly use plants that are<br/>not scientifically validated for the intended purpose, besides preparing them inadequately and<br/>selecting the wrong part of the herb, always believing they will achieve control of their disease.<br/>Despite these facts, we found elderly people who use plants that are scientifically recognized for<br/>the proposed treatment, reinforcing the popular knowledge. However, although the elderly have a<br/>popular knowledge, it is important the participation of a qualified and knowledgeable professional<br/>in order to guide the elderly regarding the risks of interaction and intoxication, besides the right<br/>use and preparation, especially regarding the safe recognition of the plant species.<br/><br/>Keywords: Phytotherapeutics, medicinal herbs, medicinal plants, treatment, elderly |
